History
Without doubt the most famous musician from Cork is blues guitarist and singer Rory Gallagher who initially made his name with the trio Taste before going solo. Although never one to flirt with main stream Gallagher had the respect of the top musicians of his time. Our favourite quote about Rory is from Jimi Hendrix. When asked by a journalist what it felt like to be the greatest guitarist in the world he replied:
"I wouldn't know. Ask Rory Gallagher".
Rory Gallagher is revered on Leeside with murals and images filling bar and club walls. After his early death in 1994 the Paul Street plaza was renamed Rory Gallagher Square.
Cork's most well known bands are the Frank & Walters and The Sultans of Ping FC, both who have charted extensively in Ireland, the UK and around the world.
